BROACH COMPANY VENDOR CAPABILITY & COMPANY PROFILE
DETROIT
BROACH COMPANY is one of the oldest and most honored broach
companies in the world. The company was started in Detroit, Michigan
in 1934 by Mr. Gustav VonReis, a Swedish Engineer.
For the first 16
years the company manufactured broach cutting tools and work holding
fixtures used on their customer's existing machine or new machine
supplied by others. In 1950, Detroit Broach purchased the rights to
manufacture the Oilgear line of broaching machines and moved to a new
facility in Rochester, Michigan. During the next 15 years the company
became a world leader in the field of broaching.
In 1957 the company
opened a plant in Greer, South Carolina, for the manufacture of
broaching tools.
In the mid sixties,
management noticed a cyclical trend in the automotive portion of the
business. The automotive companies all had new engine programs at the
same time, thus creating a large demand for broaching machines.
Automotive would then swing to transmission programs which
traditionally had low broaching content, high turning content. at this
time the company developed the Detroit Lathe to stabilize their
business. This state of the art hydraulic tracer lathe was not only
successful in the automotive market, but in the company's other
traditional markets as well.
In 1967, because of
his age and failing health, Mr. VonReis sold the company to the
Babcock & Wilcox Company who successfully ran the company until
the market collapsed in the early 1980's.
In 1982, Detroit
Broach was purchased by Acme Precision Products who immediately began
downsizing to come in line with market requirements.
In 1986, the
company headquarters were moved to it's current location at 2750
Paldan Drive, Auburn Hills, Michigan. This facility housed
Administration, Sales, Engineering, Service and assembly of machines.
At the same time, the cutting tool capabilities in the Greer, South
Carolina plant were expanded.
In 1989,
Acme Precision was dissolved and although ownership has changed, a
core of long term employees have remained and guide the company
today.
Since 1950, we have
introduced the following broaching machines:
|
Blind
Spline Broaching
Twin Slide Surface
Vertical Pot Broaches
Dual Power Pull Down
Horizontal Internal
|
Vertical
Pull Down Internal
Vertical Single Slide Surface
Horizontal Continuous Surface
Horizontal Hydraulic and Electro-
Mechanical Drive
|
In 1992, we
introduced our new electro-mechanical pull down broaching machine
which has totally eliminated the hydraulic system. This new technology
provides a cleaner and safer environment with high quality,
performance, and productivity at low cost.
In 1993, we
introduced our new vertical internal table-up broaching machine, which
is a complete new redesign of our 1950 model. This machine suits
the cell conveys designed by customers requiring flexible
manufacturing. The machines sit on the floor and do not require
pits or operator platforms.
These machines are
assembled, tooled, and tried out to customer specifications. The
machine designs are the property of Detroit Broach Company.
Fabrication and machining of machine components and durable tooling is
purchased.

tools are custom designed and built to suit. Based on this, we do not
have printed price lists. Prices are established after reviewing
customer's requirements.
